Kazakhstan is a Central Asian country bordered by Russia, China and Mongolia.  The country of Kazakhstan covers a large land area, but has a small population of only 17 million people.  Formerly one of the Soviet Republics, Kazakhstan is now an independent democratic country. The children available for adoption are from Asian, mixed Asian/Caucasian, Caucasian and Turkish heritage.  Infants may be adopted as young as 9 months old.

The government of Kazakhstan requires that both adoptive parents spend two weeks visiting with the child they wish to adopt prior to the court hearing.  Our experience has been that this visitation period is very helpful to the bonding process between parent and child.  Because of this mandatory visitation period, adoption from Kazakhstan requires a total trip of approximately 35 days.  After the court hearing, one parent may return home while the other stays to finish the adoption paperwork.  Families must visit the U.S. embassy in Kazakhstan/Almaty prior to bringing their child home.

Adoptive families complete their home study, INS approval, and Kazakhstan dossier with assistance from Tree of Life.   Families generally travel 12 to 16 weeks after dossier submission.  Upon arriving in Kazakhstan, families will meet with local officials and orphanage staff.  Families will be offered referrals of children available for adoption, one at a time, until they accept a referral.  Once families have accepted a referral, the two weeks visitation period begins.
In general, government officials in Kazakhstan prefer that there be a maximum age difference of 45 years between one parent and the child.  Exceptions may be made for special needs children.  Married couples and single women may adopt from Kazakhstan.
